The Republic of Korea Ministry of Foreign Affairs placed the call on Friday, August 21. The three officials shared relevant information and discussed future responses.

The foreign ministries of the three countries operate a channel for promptly sharing information and assessments whenever North Korea launches ballistic missiles.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff detected more than 10 short-range ballistic missiles launched from the Pyongyang area at around 5:00 p.m. local time (8:00 a.m. UTC) on August 20.

The missiles flew approximately 186 miles (300 km) toward eastern waters. Japan’s Defense Ministry reported multiple ballistic missiles with an estimated flight distance of about 199 miles (320 km) and a maximum altitude of about 56 miles (90 km), with impact outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM) stated on August 20 that it is aware of the recent missile launches and is consulting closely with allies and partners.

Based on current assessments, these events do not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel or territory, or to allies. The United States continues its defense of the U.S. homeland and allies in the region.

South Korea’s presidential national security council convened an emergency meeting and stated that the ballistic missile launch is a grave act that violates U.N. Security Council resolutions, calling on North Korea to immediately halt such actions and ordering the military to maintain full readiness.

South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back told lawmakers on August 20 that the short-range ballistic missiles are believed to be 600 mm multiple rocket launchers, a system North Korea has previously described as capable of delivering tactical nuclear warheads and known externally as the KN-25.

Ahn assessed that North Korea possesses between 80 and 120 nuclear warheads, a figure drawn from a local research institution based on estimated plutonium holdings. He noted the numbers appear somewhat different from the figure of 57 cited by President Trump.

The launches occurred as the scaled-back U.S.-Republic of Korea Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises continued. The exercises had originally been scheduled through August 27 and were shortened to end on Friday, August 21, following a U.S. order to substantially reduce them.

The U.S. and South Korean militaries were wrapping up the drills on August 21, six days earlier than initially scheduled. Live drills were scaled down from 14 to seven, which will run through August 28 as originally scheduled.

The remaining seven exercises that were removed from the lineup will be rescheduled through consultations with Washington.

A Joint Chiefs of Staff official stated that the seven drills will proceed as planned and be wrapped up by the 28th, since the duration of each training varies by exercise, and that the adjusted drills will be carried out in a combat-realistic manner.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao stated on August 14 that USS Abraham Lincoln will return home soon as part of a planned rotation. The second Gerald R. Ford-class carrier has now completed the acceptance phase that follows builder’s sea trials.

The CENTCOM commander’s itinerary included meetings in six partner nations and direct contact with the strike group that has sustained combat flight operations and blockade enforcement.

The planned rotation of Abraham Lincoln sets the formal end state for a deployment that began in November 2025.

CENTCOM Commander Middle East Trip

Adm. Brad Cooper completed a 10-day trip to the Middle East on August 15. He met senior civilian and military leaders in Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates and spent time with deployed U.S. service members.

More than 50,000 American service members are operating across the Middle East supporting various missions.

Ashore, Cooper recognized exceptional performers, reenlisted troops, and oversaw the Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve leadership transition on August 11 in Jordan, where Maj. Gen. Kevin Lambert transferred authority to Rear Adm. Liam Hulin.

At sea, Cooper visited USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) for the second time in 2026. He previously visited in February with U.S. Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

On this trip he addressed the entire Lincoln team, thanked the crew for dedication and courage, met junior service members, and awarded individuals.

He stated the Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is “a strong team of high-achieving Americans standing tall with immense, justified pride in everything they accomplished” and that “History will record this deployment as one of the most operationally intense and consequential of the modern era.”

Blockade enforcement continued in parallel. As of August 14 CENTCOM reported 62 commercial vessels redirected, 3 disabled, and 2 boarded. Preceding daily updates listed 55 redirected as of August 11 and 59 as of August 12.

CVN 79 Acceptance Trials

HII Newport News Shipbuilding announced successful completion of acceptance sea trials for John F. Kennedy (CVN 79).

The carrier returned to the shipyard after further testing and evaluation of important ship systems and components at sea. Builder’s sea trials had been completed earlier in the year between January 28 and February 4.

Derek Murphy, Newport News Shipbuilding vice president of new construction aircraft carrier programs, stated: “It is an honor to take Kennedy to sea to demonstrate the quality work and commitment by our shipbuilders. This critical set of sea trials is a testament to the entire nuclear shipbuilding enterprise and the work of thousands across our country to prepare CVN 79 to join the fleet.”

The trials assembled Newport News Shipbuilding personnel, John F. Kennedy sailors, and Navy personnel. With acceptance trials complete, the next step is preliminary acceptance enabling the Navy to begin underway test and evaluation of the ship’s unique systems.

CVN 79 is the second Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Portfolio Acquisition Executive Maritime and Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao both noted the milestone on August 15-16.

The carrier departed Newport News Shipbuilding on August 12 to begin the acceptance sea trials. No public Board of Inspection and Survey summary of discrepancies or technical findings has been released by the Navy as of August 16.

Assessment: Successful acceptance trials remove a major pre-delivery gate. If preliminary acceptance follows without significant open discrepancies, the ship moves into Navy-led testing on the path to March 2027 delivery. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei reported on 10 August that reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remains contingent on the United States ceasing what he termed illegal actions, lifting the siege, and compensating for damages.

Baghaei noted that talks with Oman on a shipping-route map were progressing, though technical issues on a joint statement remained unresolved, and that maritime services would normally involve payment.

Iranian officials have repeatedly claimed Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz. Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said in early July that the strait is under Iranian control, not that of CENTCOM.

Iranian leaders, including advisers to the Supreme Leader and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)-linked bodies, have described the waterway as subject to Iranian administration, requiring vessels to use Iranian-designated routes, and have rejected parallel or non-Iranian corridors.

The landmine boxes were recovered in an archipelago at the mouth of the Han River estuary that straddles the inter-Korean border, approximately 31 miles (50 km) west-northwest of Seoul.

Ganghwa County reported a total of 12 wooden-box landmines discovered from July 24 through August 6. Military personnel recovered three floating devices near Hwangcheon Port on July 27 after a fisherman’s report; one box was empty and the other two contained active mines that were detonated on site.

Choi Young-ran, head of civil defense for Ganghwa County, said that 15 suspected North Korean landmines had been discovered along coastal areas between July 23 and August 3 and that all had been recovered.

The county and military units estimate the devices drifted south on ocean currents after heavy rainfall in North Korean areas. The 2nd Marine Division launched search operations focused on Ganghwa Island, western islands, major beaches, and coastal zones, conducting day-and-night checks at ports, harbors, and civilian-access areas.

The county installed safety banners at 42 coastal and port sites and issued public alerts telling residents and visitors not to approach or touch any suspicious objects and to report them immediately to military units or police.

Akraminia said Iran’s strategy had been retaliatory and that operations were halted once U.S. strikes stopped. Iran continued to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz and reported ongoing bilateral discussions with Oman on navigation management.

On July 27, Esmail Baghaei addressed a weekly press briefing in Tehran and said claims Iran had requested negotiations with the United States are fabrications circulated by the other side. He added that Iran’s priority remains defending its sovereignty.

Iranian state-affiliated media reported Baghaei’s additional comments that the United States had “betrayed diplomacy” by violating a prior 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

Baghaei further noted that the only ongoing talks are with Oman and are focused on creating the necessary arrangements regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He said Iran will not allow the United States to determine the time of war and peace and will defend itself for as long as necessary.

The two sides exchanged views on shared principles and operational mechanisms for ensuring the safe passage of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz while respecting the sovereign rights of the two littoral states.

The talks were constructive and had yielded progress. The Omani delegation left Tehran on Saturday afternoon, but technical and political consultations between the two sides are continuing.

No changes have occurred in the status of maritime traffic through the Strait. Baghaei clarified that these bilateral talks had no relation to the United States.
