U.S. Central Command released a statement that said, "Aircraft Carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) with its air wing consisting of F-35C Lightning IIs works alongside the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility."

Indo-Pacific Region: From April 1 to April 5, 2025, China conducted its "Strait Thunder-2025A" military exercises near Taiwan, escalating regional tensions. The drills peaked on April 1–2 with 76 aircraft and 19 naval vessels, including 4 official ships, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense. By April 3, activity subsided to 59 aircraft, 23 naval vessels, and 8 official ships. Simulated blockade scenarios were featured in the exercises, drawing criticism from the United States, which labeled the drills as "aggressive."

In March and April 2025, U.S. military leaders presented testimony before Congress addressing critical global strategic challenges. Topics included China's military expansion, nuclear advancements by adversarial nations, and threats to homeland and space security. These discussions underscored a U.S. strategy centered on regional stabilization and global deterrence.

Americas: The Pentagon announced that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth attended the 2025 Central American Security Conference (CENTSEC) in Panama City from April 8 to 10. The conference aimed to bolster partnerships with Panama and other Central American nations in addressing regional security challenges such as illegal migration, transnational crime, China’s increasing influence, and the strategic protection of the Panama Canal.

Europe, Arctic Region: Also addressed was Russia's expansion in the Arctic, with new airfields enabling strikes across the polar cap, which the Pentagon says is the shortest path to U.S. territory, along with Russia's Northern Fleet's attempts to penetrate the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom gap with submarine-launched cruise missiles threatening the Atlantic.

According to the Pentagon, the number of Russian bomber incursions into the U.S. and Canadian air defense identification zones has increased. Additionally, the Russian Navy's surface and subsurface vessels conducted deployments off both U.S. coasts, including in the vicinity of Alaska. The United States has been tracking these incursions as well as joint Russian-Chinese bomber patrols off the Alaskan coast.

According to the report, “During the next year, the United States faces an increasingly fragile global order strained by accelerating strategic competition among major powers, more intense and unpredictable transnational challenges, and multiple regional conflicts with far-reaching implications”.

The regional conflicts the report refers to include “An ambitious but anxious China, a confrontational Russia, some regional powers, such as Iran, and more capable non-state actors are challenging longstanding rules of the international system as well as U.S. primacy within it,” adding also the Gaza crisis, and attack on Israel by the Hamas terrorist organization.

The Gaza crisis, the report states, was “triggered by a highly capable non-state terrorist group in HAMAS, fueled in part by a regionally ambitious Iran, and exacerbated by narratives encouraged by China and Russia to undermine the United States on the global stage”.

“The world that emerges from this tumultuous period will be shaped by whoever offers the most persuasive arguments for how the world should be governed, how societies should be organized, and which systems are most effective at advancing economic growth and providing benefits for more people, and by the powers—both state and non-state—that are most able and willing to act on solutions to transnational issues and regional crises,” the report states.

The report also says that China has the capability to directly compete with the United States and its allies and alter the “rules-based global order” in ways that support Chinese power over the United States.

“China’s serious demographic and economic challenges may make it an even more aggressive and unpredictable global actor. Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine underscores that it remains a threat to the rules-based international order,” the report said.

“Local and regional powers are also trying to gain and exert influence, often at the cost of neighbors and the world order itself. Iran will remain a regional menace with broader malign influence activities, and North Korea will expand its WMD capabilities while being a disruptive player on the regional and world stages.”

“Regional and localized conflicts and instability, such as from the HAMAS attacks against Israel and Israel’s subsequent invasion of Gaza, will demand U.S. attention as states and non-state actors struggle in this evolving global order, including over major power competition and shared transnational challenges,” the report continues.

“From this, conflicts and bouts of instability from East Asia to Africa to the Western Hemisphere—exacerbated by global challenges—have greater potential to spill over into many domains, with implications for the United States, U.S. allies and partners, and the world.”

It adds that “New opportunities for collective action, with state and non-state actors alike, will emerge out of these complex and interdependent issues”.

Air Defenses in the Middle East Largely Successful

Pentagon: In late January, three U.S. soldiers were killed and 40 other service members were injured at Tower 22 of the Jordanian Defense Network, a military base in Jordan near the Syrian border, following an attack by an uncrewed aerial system.

Those service members were in Jordan to support Operation Inherent Resolve, a U.S. combined mission working by, with, and through regional partners to ensure the defeat of ISIS.

Singh said the loss of lives at the base is tragic, and Centcom is assessing and reviewing the attack to find out what happened, why it happened, and how a drone was able to evade air defenses.

She also noted that in the Middle East, following more than 160 similar attacks, U.S. air defenses in the region have been mostly successful.

"For a majority, those attacks have been unsuccessful," she said.

"We've seen a majority of those attacks have minor damage to infrastructure, incur minor casualties to our service members," she said. "For the most part, our air defenses have been able to catch or been able to destroy any impact or any incoming ... whether it be rockets or drones at bases."
