China: We Will Act Strongly If US Official Insists On Visiting Taiwan
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin repeated on Thursday that China will "act strongly" to respond to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's planned trip to Taiwan and take countermeasures if the United States insists on making the visit.
"If Speaker Pelosi visits Taiwan, it would seriously violate the one-China principle and the stipulations in the three China-U.S. joint communiques and harm China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," he stated.
"Should the U.S. side insist on making the visit, China will act strongly to resolutely respond to it and take countermeasures. We mean what we say."
U.S. President Joe Biden had said that the Pentagon agrees with warnings by China that Pelosi should cancel her plans to visit Taiwan in August, though it has not been clear whether Pelosi is planning to continue her visit, or cancel her trip.
Biden told reporters that "The military thinks it’s not a good idea right now," and said that he would be speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping "in the next 10 days" after returning from a trip to Massachusetts to discuss global warming.
Pelosi has declined to discuss her plans on traveling to Taiwan, saying "I don’t ever discuss my travel plans. It’s a security issue, so I won’t be discussing that now.”
She said of her trip, "I think it is important for us to show support for Taiwan. I also think that none of us has said they are for independence when it comes to Taiwan and it is up to Taiwan to decide."
