CIA Director Asserts That China Intends To Take Control Of Taiwan
CIA Director William Burns stated that Xi Jinping has the intention to take control of the Island of Taiwan, but has been studying the Russian invasion of Ukraine and is learning that successfully taking a country over will involve overwhelming the opponent and that it cannot be done with an 'underwhelming force'.
Burns stated on Wednesday at the Aspen Security Forum, "I think the risks of [an invasion] become higher, it seems to us, the further into this decade you get. The Chinese leadership is trying to study the lessons of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and what it tells them".
He said that CIA analysts have assessed that it is "less the question of whether the Chinese leadership might choose some years down the road to use force to control Taiwan, but how and when they would do it."
"I suspect the lesson that the Chinese leadership and military are drawing is that you've got to amass overwhelming force if you're going to contemplate that in the future," he added.
The Washington Times reported Burns as saying that Chinese leaders, including President Xi, are "unsettled" by the beating that the Russian military has taken in Ukraine, and said that China is concerned that the invasion of Ukraine has driven European countries closer to the United States.
As far as whether Russian President Vladimir Putin is healthy or not, Burns said "As far as we can tell, he’s fairly healthy," despite numerous media reports suggesting otherwise.
