Former State Department Spokesperson Says China Will Be Getting Even More Aggressive
WASHINGTON - Morgan Ortagus, who is a former State Department spokesperson spoke on Fox News "Special Report" and said that she believes that China is going to be getting more aggressive in both rhetoric and action in the "foreseeable future" as it is "incredibly important for them to have control".
Ortagus stated, "I think they are only going to get more aggressive in their rhetoric and in action. In the foreseeable future. This is a sea change for how China wants to be treated on the world stage. They have a navy larger than the U.S. Navy. They see themselves as a superpower, and they are going to demand the type of respect that they think a superpower deserves on the world stage. We are not living in the 1990s or the post Cold War era anymore."
"And I think that’s important for the Biden Administration and politicians in Washington to understand that. There is a new consensus. There are new powers. And for the Chinese, Taiwan is existential to them. It’s incredibly important for them to have control. They may and probably likely will be willing to fight for it at some point. The question for us, Bret, is will we?"
This comes as China continues to ramp up its rhetoric in response to U.S. House speaker's expected visit to the island of Taiwan, which China has repeatedly warned will cause China to respond, including a post on social media by China's military that said "Get ready for war", or as the Global Times translated it "Preparing for war".
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian spoke in Beijing on July 27th where he was asked, "A US official said that if Pelosi goes to Taiwan, the military would increase its movement of forces in the Asia-Pacific, including fighter jets, what is your comment?"
Zhao replied, "Perhaps you missed our briefings in the past few days. We have made it clear our firm opposition to Speaker Pelosi's potential visit to Taiwan. If the US side insists on making the visit and challenges China's red line, it will be met with resolute countermeasures. The US must assume full responsibility for any serious consequences arising thereof.
