The U.S. To Maintain Security In Taiwan Straight, Taipei Eternally Grateful
TAIWAN - The Foreign Ministry of Taiwan expressed with sincerity, its gratefulness to the United States for its constant presence around Taiwan and for taking specific action to safeguard the region and the Taiwan Strait.
The government of the People's Republic of China, viewed the actions over the last two weeks as provocative and meddling in business that did not pertain to the United States, as it demonstrated its power during live-fire exercises for weeks now, in the waters surrounding Taiwan.
Kurt Cambell, U.S. Indo-Pacific Coordinator stated, that in response to the visit to Taiwan by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, China overreacted.
China viewed the visit as a violation of its 'One-China' policy, as Nancy Pelosi, as a high-ranking political official who is third in line to take the presidency in the event of extraordinary circumstances, showed recognition to Taiwan by her visit.
In a statement, President Tsai of Taiwan stated that the threat of China taking Taiwan by force is still very real and unwavering. As Taiwan approaches their elections season, President Tsai said that it is an election not only for potential rival candidates but also pressure from its geographical larger neighbor, China.
"Taiwanese are very enthusiastic and love freedom and democracy, so many good international friends have come to Taiwan to support us. This is a normal and good thing, but China threatens and intimidates Taiwan... However, I would like to reassure everyone that both our government and the military are prepared, and I will definitely take care of Taiwan" - President Tsai, Taiwan
China's live-fire exercises have continued, though the scale of the demonstrations has diminished as time moves on, but they continue. On August 13th, 13 Chinese warplanes crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, yet again, which has turned into a normal daily occurrence.
Going forward, the United States is planning to conduct air and maritime navigational transits through the Taiwan Strait, in a show of response to the Chinese military live-fire exercises being conducted around Taiwan.
"US forces will continue to fly, sail and operate where international law allows, consistent with our longstanding commitment to freedom of navigation... That includes conducting standard air and maritime transits through the Taiwan Strait in the next few weeks." - Kurt Cambell, US Indo-Pacific Coordinator, Presidential Advisor
Cambell went on to announce that the United States is getting ready to unveil an "ambitious roadmap" for deeper ties with Taiwan, militarily and economically, amid tensions with China.
The history of Taiwan is an interesting one. In the defeat of the Republic of China government by the People's Republic of China in 1949, the government fled to the island of Taiwan and set up a new government.
The Taiwanese government states that The People's Republic of China has never ruled Taiwan, and it has no right to decide its future, only the Taiwanese people can do that, according to Reuters.
