Russia Restarts Gas Supply To Europe Via Nord Stream At Limited Capacity
EUROPE - Russia restarted its gas supply to Europe via the Nord Stream pipeline on Thursday after 10 days of being closed off, according to Nord Stream AG, the pipeline's operator, who said: "gas is flowing". Gas flow is well below full capacity, however, and expected to fall even further.
Klaus Müller, who is the president of the Federal Network Agency in Germany tweeted that the pipeline was running at around 30% capacity and that this amount is guaranteed for two hours.
After the gas was cut off from Europe due to what Russia says was maintenance on the pipeline, and the failure of Canada to return repaired turbines due to sanctions, it was feared that Russia would not be restarting the pipeline.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had said earlier in the week that "Moscow is not shying away from using grain and energy deliveries as a weapon. We have to be resolute in protecting ourselves," by eliminating reliance on Russian gas in Europe.
Gas flowing once again should give Europe enough time to disconnect themselves from reliance on Russian fuel once and for all.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission said "Russia is using energy as a weapon and therefore, in any event, whether it's a partial major cut off of Russian gas or total cut off... Europe needs to be ready."
Canada had agreed to return the repaired turbine to Russia and has since sent it to Russia. It is expected to reach the country on Sunday. Russia has reported that another turbine is due for maintenance end of the month, which could further cut the flow of gas to 20%.
