UK Prime Minister Election September 5th | Main Trending Topic: 'The China Threat'
UNITED KINGDOM - There are major elections being held this fall around the world. In countries such as Australia, Israel, the UK, the United States, and Estonia, political campaigns are ongoing. Due to current price hikes on staple products and commodities, terms like recession and inflation are going around, but a new trend in UK campaigns has been mentioning The China Threat.
In one such election, following the exit plans of the current interim Prime Minister Boris Johnson, in the UK, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss battled it out over who would be harder on China, in an internationally televised debate in July, according to the Associated Press.
In a shift in policy, we are finding nation states are leaving a balance of investment and trade with China's growing military arm, The People's Liberation Army.
This shift has presented itself with many countries becoming increasingly vocal about their opposition to China projecting its dominance over the region and specifically its refusal to oppose Russia in its special military operation in Ukraine, the refusal to impose sanctions on Russia, and China's constant defiance of world recognition of Taiwan as an independent entity.
In demonstrations of solidarity, a Japanese delegation of former government officials went to Taiwan to discuss regional trade and security. A visit from U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi followed the next week with a stop in Taiwan on her Indo-Pacific tour. On Sunday, we've seen another U.S. Congressional Delegation arrive in Taiwan for security and trade talks.
In Australia's May elections, Conservative candidates attempted to label their opponents as reluctant to face China but were ultimately unsuccessful.
In the United Kingdom, learning from mistakes in Australia's election, Liz Truss, who is currently in the lead to replace Johnson as Prime Minister, is running on a token of a "network of liberty" to allow countries to stand up to China and Russia in a more decisive and effective manner.
As the British Foreign Secretary, Truss played a very significant role in the early days of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine. The world watched on Sky News, as the Russian Ambassador walked into her office and she erupted in defiance, saying "You should be ashamed!", reported by Express UK.
Truss has also been extra critical of China and its military exercises following the visit of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, as she states they are clearly trying to flaunt their dominance with an aggressive posture, which "threatens peace and stability in the region."
russ's opponent, Rishi Sunak, has threatened a major shake-up at the Confucius Institute which teaches Chinese language and culture at various U.K. universities, due to its partial financier being the People's Republic of China. He is also leading an alliance on the international forum to battle Chinese threats in the cyber community, as well as countering international espionage, being conducted by China.
According to the Business Standard, the new PM for the United Kingdom will be chosen on September 5th and will assume responsibilities as Prime Minister on September 6th.
