Mykolaiv, Ukraine Puts Out Official Radiation Exposure Notice For Population
[Message and photo has been translated from Ukrainian] Plan of action of the population that is outside the NPP surveillance zone in the event of a sudden radiation hazard (NPP surveillance zone within a radius of 30-50 km).
After receiving a notification of a radiation hazard, the public is asked to urgently do the following: Avoid panic, listen to the authorities' messages regarding actions in this emergency situation.
Take measures to protect against the radioactive substances from the air into the apartment (house): close the apartment, seal the frames, doors.
Take shelter in residential buildings. It is important to know that the walls of a wooden house weaken ionizing radiation by 2 times, and a brick house - by 10 times. Buried storages further weaken the radiation dose: with a wooden coating by 7 times, with brick or concrete by 40-100 times.
Make a supply of drinking water: collect water in closed containers, prepare simpler means of sanitary determination, turn off the taps.
Carry out emergency iodine prophylaxis (as early as possible, but only after a special notification): take a water-alcohol solution of iodine after meals three times a day for 7 days: children under two years old - 1-2 drops of 5% tincture per 100 ml of milk (canned) or baby formula; children older than two years and adults - 3-5 drops per glass of milk (canned) or water. Apply tincture of iodine in the form of a net to the surface of the hands once a day for 7 days.
Preparation for a possible evacuation (the decision is made by the local state administration): Specify the time of evacuation. Warn the neighbors, help children, the disabled and the elderly (they should be evacuated first).
Prepare documents and money, basic necessities, pack medicines, a minimum of underwear and clothes (1-2 shifts). Collect the available supply of canned food, including milk for children for 2-3 days. Collect things, pack them in plastic bags and bags and put them in the house most protected from the of external pollution.
Before leaving the house, turn off the sources of electricity, water and gas supply, take prepared things, put on a gas mask (respirator, cotton gauze bandage), outer clothing (raincoat, coat, cape), rubber boots (preferably) or other closed shoes.
Upon arrival at the new place of residence, carry out decontamination of protective equipment, clothes, shoes and sanitary treatment of the skin at a specially equipped point or on your own (remove outer clothing, standing with your back against the wind, if possible, clean the clothes), treat open areas of the skin with water or a special solution, which will be issued to everyone. You can use gauze or towels to treat the skin.
