Russia Declares Martial Law In 4 Annexed Regions In Ukraine
UKRAINE - Russia has declared martial law in the four regions that it has annexed in Ukraine, which include: Kherson, Luhansk, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the annexed regions would be placed under martial law on Wednesday, effective Thursday.
During a television address, Putin said, "We are working to solve very difficult large-scale tasks to ensure Russia’s security and safe future, to protect our people. Those who are on the frontlines or undergoing training at firing ranges and training centers should feel our support and know that they have our big, great country and unified people behind their back."
Putin said, "I signed a decree to introduce martial law in these four subjects of the Russian Federation. The Kyiv regime, as you know, refused to recognize the will and choice of the people and rejected any proposals for negotiations."
Russian Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that there are no plans at the moment to restrict the movement of people across Russia's borders, according to Russian state news RIA Novosti and RT.
When asked by RIA Novosti on Wednesday whether the Russian government was planning on closing the borders, Peskov reportedly said "No, [we are] not planning to."
Putin claims that this will not change much for the regions because martial law has already been in place after the regions had been annexed by Russia, but that the document signed Wednesday provides a 'legal basis' for martial law, RT cited Putin as saying.
RT also reported that Putin signed a ‘mid-level response' or 'medium action level' in a number of other regions 'adjacent to Ukraine', including Crimea, Sevastopol, and in Krasnodar, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Kursk, and Rostov regions.
