TAIWAN — Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Francois Wu stated that China is preparing to invade Taiwan during an interview with British media. This remark occurred amid ongoing military activities in the Taiwan Strait, including increased aircraft incursions and naval deployments by the People's Liberation Army.
Wu highlighted Taiwan's challenges in readiness, noting the disparity in size and capabilities between the two sides. The statement aligns with broader concerns over regional security, where Taiwan emphasizes its semiconductor industry's global importance.
Data indicates a pattern of escalating actions since 2022, with Chinese forces conducting exercises that simulate blockade scenarios. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense has reported consistent violations of its air defense identification zone that have been increasing yearly since 2020.
China sees Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), as well as the entire Taiwan Strait, as an "inalienable part of China", and sees reunification as a matter of national importance while Taiwan continues to maintain its own independent government.

While the US does not officially recognize Taiwan as an independent nation, it also does not acknowledge China's claim over Taiwan and maintains a policy of "strategic ambiguity". Furthermore, the U.S. views the Taiwan Strait as international waters, open to navigation by all nations.
