The moon's South Pole is expected to contain water in the form of ice located underground which can be used as oxygen, water, and fuel.

NEW DELHI - India successfully landed on the Moon, near its South Pole, after Russia's attempt failed, becoming the fourth country to successfully land on the Moon. 

On August 17th, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) released a statement confirming that the lander module had successfully reached separation from the main Chandrayaan-3 "Mooncraft".

International Space Race To Moon's South Pole Begins

FLORIDA - NASA administrator Bill Nelson said on Tuesday at the Kennedy Space Center that the Moon's South Pole may become another "South China Sea" with China staking claims and telling other countries to "stay out" if they end up getting there first.

MOSCOW - After Russia launched its first moon lander in nearly 50 years on the Soyuz-2 Fregat rocket from the Vostochny Cosmodrome on August 11th, the Luna-25, which was scheduled to land on the moon on August 21st instead crashed into the moon after a failed orbital adjustment.
