EAST CHINA SEA — On May 27 two Chinese Coast Guard vessels entered waters Japan administers around the Senkaku Islands and approached a Japanese fishing vessel, causing it to withdraw from the area.

Japan Coast Guard patrol boats intercepted the Chinese vessels and directed them to depart the territorial sea.

The event matches the operational pattern Japan has documented for years in which Chinese government vessels enter the 12-nautical-mile limit Japan claims and close on Japanese fishing craft operating there.

Japan Coast Guard statements describe the Chinese vessels crossing into the territorial limit and maneuvering toward the fishing boat.

The Japanese vessel withdrew after the approach. Japanese patrol assets then engaged the Chinese ships and ordered them out. No collision, boarding, or weapons use occurred.
