NATO Discusses Further Cooperation With Georgia, Russia Says It May Annex Breakaway Regions
NATO's Secretary-General said that Russia’s holding of elections in the occupied parts of Georgia and Ukraine is “completely illegal".
TBILISI - NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg held meetings with leaders in Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi on Monday to discuss furthering cooperation between the alliance and the former Soviet state, as well as the path to eventual NATO membership.
Stoltenberg met with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and called on Russia to reverse its recognition of the Georgian territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states, adding that Russia’s holding of elections in the occupied parts of Georgia and Ukraine is “completely illegal,” according to a statement by NATO.
