Russian Tu-142 Bear-F Approaches British Carrier Strike Group
Two British F-35B Lightning II jets launched from HMS Prince of Wales intercepted the Russian aircraft and escorted it until it departed the area.
NORWEGIAN SEA — According to the British Ministry of Defense statement released on July 6, On July 2 a Russian Tu-142 Bear-F maritime patrol aircraft repeatedly approached the UK Carrier Strike Group led by HMS Prince of Wales in the Norwegian Sea while the group operated under Operation FIRECREST (UK Carrier Strike Group deployment).
The aircraft flew at low altitude and passed unnecessarily close to the carrier, dropped multiple sonobuoys in proximity to the vessel, and did not respond to calls on international safety frequencies, according to the British Defense Ministry.

The Carrier Strike Group continues operations with NATO allies in the High North to reinforce security in the Arctic and North Atlantic.
Context of Operation FIRECREST
Operation FIRECREST involves the deployment of the UK Carrier Strike Group, centered on HMS Prince of Wales, to the North Atlantic and High North.
The deployment, announced earlier in 2026, includes exercises with NATO partners and focuses on regional security amid heightened activity in the area.
HMS Prince of Wales is accompanied by elements including Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan and replenishment vessel RFA Tidespring, with more than 1,500 British personnel involved.
This marks the first time NATO air defense missions have been conducted from a European carrier using F-35Bs from the ship.
UK Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis visited forces onboard HMS Prince of Wales off Iceland under NATO command, highlighting the group’s role in patrolling the skies above Iceland and the High North against increased threats posed by Russia.
