MIDDLE EAST — On February 5, U.S. officials confirmed nuclear talks with Iran would proceed in Muscat, Oman, on February 6 at 10 a.m. local time, following a brief cancellation due to Tehran’s demands for a bilateral format and venue change from Istanbul.
U.S. President Donald Trump maintained warnings to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, emphasizing Iran’s need to address its nuclear program, ballistic missiles, proxy support, and domestic policies.
The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group remained deployed in the Arabian Sea, responding to prior incidents including a drone interception and vessel harassment in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian leaders reiterated threats of regional war if attacked, amid internal concerns that strikes could reignite protests suppressed in January, with casualty estimates varying from 3,117 per government figures to over 36,500 per rights groups.
