TEXAS COAST — The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston received a report of a fuel oil discharge at approximately 9:50 p.m. on October 29 following a vessel’s allision with Pier 32 at the Port of Galveston.
The incident involved a spill of fuel oil from the vessel, with the source subsequently secured. The Coast Guard, in coordination with the Texas General Land Office and the responsible party, Forestwave Navigation BV, deployed personnel and assets to the scene for containment and mitigation.
Air monitoring and safety assessments of the area continued without reports of injuries or wildlife impacts. The Galveston Ship Channel remained closed from Gulf Copper to the Pelican Island Bridge to minimize the spill’s spread.
The closure of the ship channel aimed to facilitate response operations and reduce potential environmental effects. Officials emphasized ongoing monitoring to evaluate air quality and any emerging risks.
The responsible party collaborated fully in the response efforts, contributing resources alongside government agencies. No immediate threats to public health were identified based on initial assessments. The incident highlighted standard protocols for maritime spills in busy port areas.
