U.S. Deploys NORAD Aircraft to Greenland, Trump Administration Announces Framework for Future Deal on Greenland and Entire Arctic Region
The framework focuses on enhancing security for the United States and NATO nations in the Arctic.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald J. Trump has announced the formation of a framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland and the entire Arctic region, based on discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
This initiative involves suspending tariffs scheduled for February 1, 2026, on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, provided negotiations progress.
The framework focuses on enhancing security for the United States and NATO nations in the Arctic. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff lead the negotiations, reporting directly to the President. Talks also cover the Golden Dome project pertaining to Greenland.
This development aligns with longstanding U.S. strategic priorities in the Arctic, as detailed in Department of Defense documents and recent legislative proposals. U.S. engagement with Greenland traces back to World War II, with the establishment of military facilities under the 1951 Defense Agreement with Denmark.
Recent actions include the introduction of the Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act on January 12, 2026, emphasizing countermeasures against influences from China and Russia.
