North Korea Fires Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile Off Its West Coast

North Korea is suspected by South Korean military officials to have launched a ballistic missile with a hypersonic warhead to test the performance of its delivery system.

TOKYO/SEOUL - North Korea launched at least one ballistic missile from its west coast with a maximum altitude of about 100 kilometers (62 miles), according to both the South Korean military and Japanese Self-Defense Forces.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said it presumes the missile is a medium-range ballistic missile and reported that it flew about 800 kilometers (497 miles) before it landed in the Sea of Japan (also called the East Sea by South Korea).

The missile launch, which was detected at 6:53 a.m. local Seoul time, is the third this year by North Korea.
